Everyone knows about Memorial Day, Halloween, or Mother’s and Father’s Day. There are government holidays that let you have a day off work or school and the bustle of life. There are delicious holidays like Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day. And you definitely should celebrate all of those holidays (and all of the others, too) with a new puzzle if for no other reason than that you can, because jigsaw puzzles are always a good idea, regardless of your age, gender, or situation in life. But January is definitely the time to get yourself a few new jigsaw puzzles for another reason, too.
For those of you who don’t know, January is International Brainteaser Month. That means you can legitimately spend all of your free time in the month doing any kind of brainteasers – word games, arithmetic-related riddles and games, and more. Our favorites, naturally, are good ol’ jigsaw puzzles. We would do them all day every day if we didn’t have to have jobs to pay for more jigsaw puzzles!
Puzzles can help you stay mentally healthy and even improve cognitive function, which is just one of many reasons to enjoy one while you participate in International Brain Teaser Month. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, “research has found that keeping the brain active seems to increase its vitality and may build its reserves of brain cells and connections.”
No matter what type of brainteaser you decide to participate in, definitely make sure you exercise your brain somehow. We’re sure you can find an effective way to do so. If you need a suggestion, though, hop on over to our Winter Puzzles page and pick up a few seasonal jigsaw puzzles to work on in your spare time this month. Not interested in cold weather puzzles? We have a few Wysocki puzzles you might like, or even a great selection of 300-piece large-piece puzzles to choose from.
National Puzzle Day – January 29th
Last but definitely not least, don’t forget to celebrate National Puzzle Day! Brainteaser Month culminates in National Puzzle Day on January 29th of each year. We’ll be sure to do something fun for you on National Puzzle Day, because it’s clearly the most important holiday of the year. Or one of them, anyway.
I don’t know what brilliant person decides to make these often odd and little-known holidays, but this is one I am definitely behind all the way. National Puzzle Day is the perfect opportunity for those of us who love a good jigsaw puzzle, mind game, Sudoku, crossword, and more to sit down and have some mental exercise while relaxing at the same time. It’s a win-win situation all around!
Celebrate Brainteaser Month and National Puzzle Day by being festive with a new puzzle or two!
And, as always, Happy Puzzling!
